Well, we’ve had an amazing first week in India. Leanne finished her course in printmaking and started another one on traditional tie and dying. We visited the Jaipur City Palace and also a Jeweller in the city who is a fifth generation jeweller. His shop has been in the family since 1827. Leanne got her picture in the newspaper and we’ve seen some cool critters as well!
There are a lot of pictures here from the Jaipur City Palace, which was amazing. The palace itself is actually inside the walled Pink City, or Old City. The Pink City was painted pink in 1876 when the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) was visiting as a gesture to welcome him to Jaipur. Hawa Mahal (or the Windy Palace) was built in the 18th century by Sawai Pratap Singh and is also inside the Pink City. It’s where all the women would hang out and peer through the stone latice work at the street. This was so that they could see out of the palace without being seen themselves. I won’t give anything away, but Leanne is thinking a lot about this concept for her final piece that she may be able to exhibit in the city!
…Oh, and it’s 44 degrees here.
